Alex has announced that every prison officer in England and Wales will have access to a body-worn video camera during their shift.

These cameras help prison officers to keep safe, to de-escalate volatile situations and deter prisoner violence. The cameras will also help reduce the need to pay unnecessary compensation to prisoners who make false allegations.

Alex said:

"These new, improved video cameras are proving highly effective at preventing vexatious claims by prisoners, calming volatile situations, and keeping our dedicated prison officers and our prisons safe.

"Synthetic pepper spray, x-ray body scanners and airport style security are helping turn prisoners away from crime and towards purposeful activity."

The official Royal Air Force motto is Per Ardua ad Astra, which roughly translates as ‘Through Hard Work to the Stars’. I thought of it last week when I was invited to meet Cheltenham apprentices working at GE Aerospace.
