Alex drew on the learnings of renowned seventeenth century English jurist William Blackstone during an interview with Robert Peston about the Horizon scandal.
Explaining that some guilty people may unavoidably be acquitted as part of the exoneration being introduced, Alex said:
"We were faced with a series of imperfect options and we have to be clear that there will be some guilty people who effectively get a windfall acquittal.
"One remembers the William Blackstone quote that it is “better that ten guilty persons escape than one innocent suffer."
"The injustice that those innocent people have suffered is so great that this is an uncomfortable and difficult [course] but ultimately it is the right thing to do."
