Last Saturday I was delighted to be invited to join Cheltenham & County Harriers for a training session at the Prince of Wales stadium.
This much loved local club turns out teams for all age groups, competing in track and field, cross country, road running and sportshall athletics. It helps athletes of all abilities to achieve their personal goals whilst promoting high standards of leadership, equality, respect, honesty and teamwork.
Remarkably, for the second year running its under 13 and under 15 athletes are one of just seven teams nationwide to qualify for the National Final of the Youth Development League on 2 September. That is a stunning achievement for the athletes themselves. But enormous credit too must go to the parents, volunteers and coaches who make such sacrifices to enable this success.
Once I’d caught my breath after being soundly beaten in an impromptu sprint, I had the chance to say a few words to the young people. I invited them to lift their eyes beyond the immediate priority of 2 September and reflect that they are investing in their own personal futures.
That’s because research in the USA and also the UK has shown time and again that youth sport brings benefits later in life. Former student athletes typically advance faster in their careers and earn more by the age of 30. The requirement to build discipline, determination and leadership, as well as an ability to work as a team pays dividends in the world of work.
It's another reason why I believe so passionately in active lifestyles. It’s a vital tool to drive social mobility, and enable young people in Cheltenham to go as far as their talents will take them.
So it is good news that Cheltenham is benefiting from the Government’s £230 million investment to build and improve sports facilities by 2025. Over £400,000 has already been spent on pitch and changing room improvements at Burrows Field to support Leckhampton Rovers FC, investment will benefit generations to come.
It all contributes to a stronger economy and a healthier society.
