Alex has announced a clampdown on crooked lawyers who breach their professional obligations.
The vast majority of lawyers act with professionalism and integrity, but a small minority have offered ways for potential clients to dupe immigration officials with harrowing, but entirely bogus, back stories in exchange for thousands of pounds.
Following a letter from Alex in which he called for the “full force of sanctions” to be used against lawyers found guilty of breaching their professional obligations, the Solicitors Regulation Authority have already shut down three law firms and suspended the practising certificates of their principals.
Alex is now going further, with the Professional Enablers Taskforce bringing together regulatory bodies, law enforcement teams and Government departments to increase enforcement action against lawyers who help migrants exploit the immigration system.
Alex said
“Solicitors are critical to the operation of a fair immigration system. I know that the overwhelming majority take their professional duties and obligations extremely seriously.
"We cannot allow unscrupulous individuals to undermine public confidence in our legal and immigration systems, nor let their actions tarnish the reputation of the vast majority."
