Alex travelled to the USA for talks with his US counterparts and key stakeholders on issues ranging from holding Russia to account for atrocities in Ukraine, to upholding the international rule of law and access to justice.
Alex met with US Attorney General Merrick Garland, his deputy Lisa Monaco, as well as members of Congress and a US Supreme Court judge and gave a speech at Johns Hopkins University in Washington DC to American legislators, legal professionals and students on the international rules based order. Alex urged the international community to come together to win what he called 'the global contest of ideas'.
Alex said:
"The truth is we are in a global contest of ideas, a contest between rule of law nations like ours and those who offer an authoritarian alternative, a solution that says ‘might is always right’. And it means that a global post-war consensus, which we assumed was unshakeable now needs shoring up..."
Alex also saw first-hand New York's pioneering problem-solving courts in action. These courts reduce reoffending by using alternatives to custody which require offenders to address the complex drivers of their crimes. We are piloting similar courts here in the UK in Liverpool, Teesside and Birmingham to provide enhanced community supervision to tackle the root causes of offending.
