Alex was at the Despatch Box to introduce the Sentencing Bill to the House of Commons.
The Sentencing Bill introduces fundamental reforms to the justice system that take dangerous offenders off the streets for longer while rehabilitating lower risk offenders.
Measures include:
- Those who murder with sexual or sadistic conduct, can expect for life to mean life and to never be released from prison.
- Rapists will now spend the entirety of their sentence in prison – so that victims get the justice they deserve.
- Offenders who refuse to face the consequences of their actions will be ordered into the dock to attend their sentencing – and will face longer behind bars if they refuse to appear.
To ensure that prison does not punish redeemable offenders into a cycle of re-offending, lowest risk offenders will be given the chance to turn themselves away from crime by repaying their debt to society by cleaning up neighbourhoods and scrubbing graffiti off walls.
