I wanted to brief Echo readers on some of the steps that are being taken to help our Ukrainian friends.
First, I am working with Cheltenham-based Ukrainians to help their relatives in Ukraine get to safety. If you know of anyone who needs my help, don’t hesitate to put them in contact with me.
Second, we are supplying defensive munitions. These include 2,000 highly effective Anglo-Swedish ‘NLAW’ anti-tank weapons which have proved invaluable in holding back columns of Russian armoured vehicles and tanks, according to Ukraine’s military.
Third, we are providing £220m in emergency and humanitarian aid.
Fourth, we have established two routes to safety for Ukrainians fleeing this horror. Family members of British nationals resident in Ukraine can now apply for visas through the temporary location in Lviv, or through centres in Poland, Moldova, Romania and Hungary. The usual language requirements and salary thresholds have been removed, and there is no limit on the numbers. In addition, we have set up a new bespoke and unlimited ‘humanitarian sponsorship pathway’ for Ukrainians who may not have family ties with the UK but who are able to match with individuals, charities, businesses and community groups. Look out for more details in the coming days if you want to get invovled.
Fifth we have imposed the most significant package of sanctions in British history, together with our allies. Russia’s central bank cannot borrow on international markets, Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay are no longer functioning in Russia, and much more besides.
Sixth, in my role as Solicitor General I have authorised a package of draft emergency legislation to come before Parliament, including an Economic Crime Bill to create a Register of Overseas Entities to crack down on foreign criminals using UK property to launder their money.
Thank you to all those groups, including church congregations in Cheltenham, who are stepping up to coordinate donations and other support. You show our town at its best.
