Alex has long argued that Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPPs) sentences are a stain on the justice system. Even the creator of the sentences, David Blunkett, accepts they were a mistake.
So Alex is taking action to curtail licence periods for those serving these discredited sentences, so those deemed safe to release can move on with their lives without compromising public safety.
Under Alex's reforms, IPP offenders serving their sentence in the community will have their licence reviewed by the Parole Board three years after their first release - instead of ten.
Alex said:
"We are taking decisive action to curtail IPP licence periods to give rehabilitated people the opportunity to move on with their lives, while continuing to make sure the public are protected from the most serious offenders.
"This is a major step towards wiping away the stain of IPP sentences from our justice system, without compromising public protection."
