As Prisons Minister, Alex announced plans to overhaul the system of criminals' unpaid work to ensure that it is visible, credible, local and paying back to the communities that have been most directly affected by the relevant crime.
The Ministry of Justice have now opened Alex's planned portal to allow local people to propose what unpaid work is carried out by offenders in their local area.
Suggested projects include:
- removing graffiti
- clearing wasteland
- decorating a community centre

Commenting, Alex said: "Unpaid work should be all about 'tough love' - making offenders do robust and demanding work to repay their debt to the local community, whilst at the same time teaching them the discipline and life skills they need to get their lives back on track and become a contributing member of society.
Here in Cheltenham, we know what the jobs are that need doing locally. We know where the grot-spots are. So let's get them sorted. I would encourage people to use the portal provided."
